'Robert Harvey's Will, dated March 25, 1831'.

6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

'By Presumption of Almighty God I, Robert Harvey of Botetourt County and State of Virginia, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, but well knowing the uncertainty of life do make the following disposition of my estate that is to say all my estate real and personal in proportion remand or expectancy, I do hereby vest in my Executors herein hereafter named or such of them as may act and their successors forever for the uses upon the trusts, I for the purpose herein after contain and direct, that is to say it is my will and desire that all my Just Debts be paid and the accounts of my estate settled by my Executors as soon after my decease as possible, my wife is to be Liberally and Amply provided for out of my estate & to that I will and direct that my Exrs. appraise to her such portion of my land and personal estate as she and they may approve, which she is to hold and enjoy during her natural life or widowhood & no longer, and in lieu of the property secure to her by our Marriage Contract of Record in the Clerk's Office of Rockbridge County. To my daughter Mary Trigg, I devise for her lifetime the tract of land wheron she now lives including the lands belonging to me, about the title to which there is no dispute and if that part of it which is involved in controversy with Pecks Hrs. shall be lost my Exrs. are directed to give to her the use of such of my other property as will in the estimation be an equivalent, having reference to the deduction from my estate which the said loss will occasion. I have already given to my said daughter seventeen thousand and thirty five dollars partly in the lifetime of her late husband & partly since his death including three Negroes, Ben, Essinline & Charlott with which she is to be charged in the final distribution of my estate."
Image 3 - 'To my son Lewis Harvey I have advanced eleven thousand three hundred and eighteen dollars with which he is to be charged in the final distribution of my estate. My son William Moore Harvey and Breckenridge Harvey are to be maintained and educated out of my estate until the responsibility attained to the age of twenty one without and deduction from the respective share of my estate. My Furnace estate is to be rented out and my Negroes hired if my Exrs. shall think it advisable and consultation with my friend James Breckenridge by whom I devise and direct they are to act in all matters of importance relating to management or disposition of my estate. When the youngest of my infant sons shall attain to full age then and not until then, are my Exrs. to make an equal distribution of my estate amongst all my children, Mary Trigg, Lewis harvey, the children of Henry Harvey, William Moore Harvey and Breckenridge Harvey & if the estate is not in a situation for a final division they will distribute only so much as is consistent with th interest of the estate whatever share of my estate shall be coming to henry Harvey will be conveyed to Trustees for the use of his children or otherwise disposed of as my said firend James Breckenridge may appoint & direct my intention being to make in full to his children. I appoint my friend Joseoph Hannah guardian of my son William Moore Harvey, and my friend Cary Breckenridge guardian of my Son Breckenridge Harvey to whom I submit with great confidence the superintedance of their interests in my estate, their morals & education. I am aware of the Delecacy, trouble and responsibility of the trust. I have no other apology to offer for imposing it on them, than the satisfaction of a parent that is true ofspring may be conducted to manhood in the paths of virtue, morality & religion. I appoint my son Lewis Harey and my friend George McDonald my Executors of my last will and testament and revoking all former wills by me made. I [sic] declaring, pronounce & publish this my last will and Testament. Given under my hand and seal this 25th, day of March in the year of Christ one thousand and eight hundred and thirty one. (1831).

Among the early grants was one from George II to Colonel Robert Harvey for his services in the Indian Wars, for a boundry of at least ten thousand acres in Roanoke Co., and large boundarys in other parts of Southwest Virginia. Col. Harvey established the first Iron Furnace in Roanoke Co. as early as 1749 and continued in operation for many years.
