- Elbert Dovel was born on July 10, 1929 in Rockingham County to Rev. Homer Dovel and Hettie Lam Dovel. He married Emma Jean Frances Hensley Dovel. They had five children: Kemberly Smith, Lorna "Bonnie" Saunders, Amy Dovel, Nathen Dovel, and Laila Meftah. Elbert Dovel died on September 25, 2020, and is buried in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. He lived in Roanoke.
