Description
Colonel George Hancock was born in Chesterfield County in 1754. He later relocated to Botetourt County where he practiced law, was appointed the rank of colonel, and served as Commonwealth's attorney. He served in the third and fourth Congress. He died in 1820 at the Fotheringay estate, where he is entombed.
Image 1: A clipping from the Weekly Raleigh Register, dated August 18, 1820. It reads, "At Fotheringay, Va. his late residence, Col George Hancock, in the 66th year of his age. In early life this venerable patriot entered the army, where he continued until the termination of our Revolutionary war, beloved by his brother officers. Having performed the duty of a soldier, with honor to himself, he left the army, and was for some time a representative in the Congress of the U.S."
Image 2: A clipping from the Richmond Enquirer, dated April 21, 1820. It reads, "Valuable Land for Sale. The subscriber being anxious to remove to the western country, offers for sale the plantation whereon he resides, called Fotheringay, in Montgomery county, Virginia. This tract contains 800 acres, about half of which is low grounds, cleared and considered first rate stable and meadow land. It lies on both sides of the Roanoke river, and the main western road runs through it. The buildings are new and valuable. -On part of this land, IS AN ESTABLISHMEN FOR A TAVERN; which, without any land annexed rents for $200 per annum. There are at the farm between two and three hundred cattle, a like number of sheep, and good stock of hogs, which can be bought with the place. -Also the turnpike road from the uppermost crossing of the Roanoke river across the Alleghany mountain, of which I am the sole proprietor-which road has been well establlished and in operation about sixteen years. Also, something over [1500] acres of land adjoining and contiguous therto, situated from 3 to 7 [miles] of Montgomery court house, on which are four plantations, leased out. -Also, a tract on both sides of Little river, in which are about [420] acres.....I also offer for sale in behalf of my son George, a tract of [588] acres in Botetourt county, in the north side of the Roanoke. This tract contains about two hundred acres of first rate [illegible] the balance good tobacco and grain lands. About twenty acres of teh bottom is in woods, on this tract is a stock of cattle, sheep, and hogs, which may be bought with the land. The terms will be fair and equitable, and negroes in families received in part payment for all, or any part of this property. The property in [Botetourt] will be [illegible] by Mr. John C. Griffin, of Fincastle, or George Hancock."
