This record contains four document pages of the will of John Cartmill and includes a handwritten portion as well as inventory charts from the 1850 US Federal Census.
Image 1: A handwritten page from the will of John Cartmill. It reads, “I John Cartmill of Botetourt County and State of Virginia do make this my last Will and Testament revoking all others. In the first place I desire that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid. In the second place I give and bequeath to my niece Ann Sisson all my interest in the Homeplace comprising summary parts of lands lying and attached to the home place also all the stock, plantation, utensils, carts, and my carriage and buggy in fact every thing on the place, also all my interest in the Negroes and also all my interest in the debts due me and any money that may be on hand at the time of my death. In the third place I give to James Sisson’s heirs by Polly Cartmille my interest in the Bridge between Petersburg and Buchanan to be distributed equally between them. In the fourth place I give and bequeath to the heirs of Thomas Brown by Ann Cartmill the Robinson and Smith Lock of Land lying in Botetourt County about three miles from Petersburg also all my property in Petersburg and Buchanan as well as all of my property not bequeathed elsewhere. It is my wish that my niece Ann Sisson shall receive…”

I do further more constitute and appoint Francis Henderson and Thomas Brown Executors to that portion of my Estate bequeathed to the heirs of Thomas Brown [illegible].
