"Watson Reunion Held at Home of O. P. Markham

The reunion Sunday, July 30th, 1933, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Markham at Arcadia, was held in honor of the memory of James Flemming Watson, born August 19th, 1799, and his wife, Cynthia Wilkerson, born November 4th, 1804.

James Flemming Watson was the son of William Watson, who was one of the first of the name to immigrate to Virginia from Scotland. His wife, who was a Miss Owen, was a direct descendant of Pocahontas, through the Virginia Randolphs.

Mr. and Mrs. Watson were the parents of fifteen children. Seven of their sons went from this home to join the Army of the Confederacy. When General Robert E. Lee and his daughter, Mildred, passed riding Traveler and Lucy Long, on their way to the Peaks of Otter, he stopped and inquired about the seven Watson brothers who had served in his army.

Several of the sons and daughters settled in Rockbridge and Bedford counties and have many descendants.

The present house built on the original foundation is spacious and modern in every way with huge lawn and beautiful flowers.

The Watson plantation, situated on Jennings Creek, in Botetourt county, was the home of James Flemming Waton [sic] and remained in the possession of the family for a century. Pages from an old store ledger dated 1799, were exhibited by Mrs. Markham. The only person present to represent the first line of descendants was Mrs. Barnett C. Watson, of Roanoke, Va.

The second generation was represented by the oldest grandchild, Mrs. Sarah Lee Watson Arrington and the following grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, many with their wives and husbands: Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Elmer Watson, Mr. and Mrs. Cline Sanderson and children, Cline Noell, Maryphene and Harry, Mrs. Willie Watson Burks and children, Watson, Margaret and Perry, and Mrs. Walter Seay, of Roanoke; Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Watson, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Arrington, of Sedalia; Mrs. Myrtle Hatcher McNair and chlidren, Ruth, Marion and Douglas; Mr. Oscar Hatcher, Mrs. Lawrence Hatcher, of Natural Bridge; Mrs. Minnie Hatcher Waskey, of Clifton Forge; Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Owen and son, J. C. Owen, Jr., of Eagle Rock; Mrs. Fannie DeWitt Rusher, Mrs. Elizabeth Rusher and Fred Rusher; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hodges, Mrs. Cynthia Hatcher, Miss Nancy Arrington, Mrs. Delia Kennedy Brown and children, Al, Mary Lizzie and Nancy. Mrs. Eonie Shrewsbury and sons, Felix, Jack and Jimmie; Mrs. Ada Watson, Ella Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hatcher, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. DeWitt and children, Hazel, Camden and Jean; Kenneth Anderson Watson, Raymond Watson, Jack Watson, Miss Bertha Watson, Mr. and Mrs. John F. Watson, of Arcadia; William N. Watson, of Bedford.

Visitors were Cathryn Thomas, Helen Turpin, L. R. Smith, Mrs. Lena Markham, Mrs. Eunice Markham Webber, Edith Watson DeWitt and son, Edison, Mrs. Vivian Hawkins and daughter, Luray; Jim Owens, Mrs. Owen and daughter, Annie Burks, Sidney Noell, Brack Markam and Jasper Lawless, of Arcadia.

The picnic lunch, which included all the good things of the season, with plenty of fried chicken and country ham, was spread on the tables in the yard. This was supplemented by coffee, tea and cold buttermilk from the old springhouse which has served five generations with refreshing drinks.

Mr. and Mrs. O. P. Markham were the cordial host and hostess, adding much pleasure to the occasion, and invited the families to have a reunion with them next year."
