- Description

It is difficult to work in “Nazareth” I find, as we each have found doubtless. Yet I hope to put on record the labor of love my ancestors accomplished for “Galatia” and “Locust Bottom” also. That old church of Brick is gone but a brick Chapel has been built there recently. It is situated not far from Glen Wilton Church.

BRIEF HISTORY OF GALATIA CHURCH
By Mrs. Howard McClung Historian
Galatia is a daughter of Locust Bottom Church which was organized in 1795, near the present town of Glen Wilton. Originally Locust Bottom was a German Lutheran Church and a Centennial service was held in 1895. At this early date there was no missionary society in the Locust Bottom Church but Sabbath School was held after preaching services in the morning.
In the summer of 1886 Rev. P. Frank Price, whose father was then pastor of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church, and he having taught in the Fincastle school the previous session came to the Gala neighborhood, held Sabbath school, and encouraged the members of Locust Bottom, living in this community to build their own church. This they did and on December third, 1887 the Galatia Presbyterian Church, named by Dr. price, was organized in the then new building located in a lovely James River Valley, as Gala, Virginia.
The first pastor of Galatia was Dr. P. Frank Price, then a student in the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Price came each summer and served as pastor from 1886 until 1889.
After this he went as a missionary of our church to China and is there now. He was elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States meeting in Augusta, Georgia last May.
While in the States in 1936, Dr. Price visited in our community and held services in the church.
The Charter members of Galatia Church were: Mrs. W. B. Bean,
