The Pastors of Galatia Church with dates of service: Dr. Frank Price student pastor during summers 1887-1889. Dr. E. W. McCorkle was installed as the first pastor in 1889 and served until 1891. While here Dr. McCorkle attended the Pan American meeting in London and Rev. C. K. Cummins acted as a supply. Later Mr. Cummins went as a missionary to Japan. Dr. P. C. Clarke 1891-1897, Rev. Charles Friend 1897-1898, Dr. R. W. Joplin 1899-1905, Rev. N. A. Parker 1906-1912, Rev. D. M. Stockard 1913-1915, Rev. Batt 1916-1917, Rev. S. S. Oliver 1819-1922, Rev. J. C. Clarke, July 1925-May 1925, Rev. James A. Armstrong April 1926 - to the present time.
The church at this time is in the Fincastle group. Our Church has always been self supporting, but owing to deaths and removals from the community the membership has been reduced. The present being only fifty.
Fruits of the Church - As has been stated Galatia’s first student pastor Rev. P. F. Prices has been a missionary in China for many years.
Rev. Calvin Knox Cummins also a student pastor went as a missionary to Japan, where he later died.
Dr, Elizabeth Rosser Carper, daughter of Mr. Wyndham Carper, one of the elders of Galatia, went as a Medical Missionary to China. She was a member of Galatia at the time but went out under the Northern Church, to take the place of the martyred Dr. Elianor Cheslant. While in China Dr. Carper married Dr. Shelby. At the present time they are living in Indiana.
While there was a branch railroad in operation from Gala to the ore mines above Daggers Springs a chapel was built on the mountain near the mines. Services and Sabbath School were maintained in this church as a mission of the Galatia Presbyterian Church. Sometime after the mines closed services were discontinued and the building dismantled and moved away.
Sabbath School has been held regularly in the Galatia Church since it’s origin. (Sometimes discontinuing for the winter months.)
The Superintendents have been: Messrs. W. R. Carper, W. S. McClung, William Hannah, J. J. Spangler, Mr. Spangler is serving in this capacity at the present time.
Organized work by the ladies of the church has been effectively carried on since 1910. Before this date, while there was no definite organization of this type, the ladies greatly aided in the work of the church. Much of this historical data of Galatia Church was destroyed by fire in the home of an elder, therefore many interesting facts cannot be given accurately. List of past presidents are: Mrs. J. W. Stull, Miss Lizzie Whitten, Mrs. W. S. McClung, Mrs. M. R. Morgan, Mrs. M. Edmond.
The present Auxiliary have done very effective work, for the size of it’s membership since about 1920. There are only two
